Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella testified in the Musk v. Altman trial, discussing Microsoft's partnership with OpenAI and addressing Elon Musk's allegations regarding OpenAI's shift from its nonprofit origins.
In the ongoing Musk v. Altman trial, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella took the stand to discuss the company's partnership with OpenAI. Nadella detailed Microsoft's financial support for OpenAI, including a $15 million loss incurred by providing discounted access to its Azure cloud services in 2016. He also presented an August 2017 email from Elon Musk, in which Musk expressed appreciation for Microsoft's assistance following an OpenAI bot's victory in a Dota 2 tournament. Nadella stated that Musk did not raise concerns about the partnership as it expanded, including when Microsoft's investment increased by $10 billion in 2023. He noted that he and Musk had direct communication channels, saying, "We have each other's phone numbers." Nadella also addressed his previous comments regarding OpenAI's 2023 leadership changes, describing the situation as "amateur city" and emphasizing his efforts to stabilize the organization during that period.
