Hantavirus Outbreak on MV Hondius Cruise Ship Leads to Multiple Deaths and International Response

A hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship has resulted in three deaths and several confirmed cases, prompting international health measures and passenger evacuations. The Dutch-flagged vessel departed Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1, 2026, with approximately 150 passengers and crew. The first symptoms appeared on April 6, leading to the death of a passenger on April 11. Subsequent fatalities included the deceased passenger's spouse and another individual on board.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed seven cases of hantavirus infection, with two additional probable cases under investigation. The virus has been identified as the Andes strain, known for its potential human-to-human transmission, though such occurrences are rare.

In response to the outbreak, the MV Hondius was initially anchored off the coast of Cape Verde. Due to local facilities being unable to manage a safe evacuation, the ship proceeded to Tenerife in Spain's Canary Islands, arriving on May 10. Evacuation flights have been organized for passengers to return to their respective countries, including the United States, Australia, and the Netherlands.

Health authorities in affected countries have implemented monitoring and quarantine measures for returning passengers. In the United States, 18 passengers are under observation, with some completing a 42-day health monitoring period at home. France has confirmed its first case among repatriated passengers and has enforced strict containment measures to prevent further transmission.

The WHO has emphasized that, despite the severity of the outbreak, the risk to the general public remains low. Investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the infection and to assess the potential for human-to-human transmission of this hantavirus strain.
