Trump Administration Considers Suspending Federal Gas Tax Amid Rising Fuel Prices

Résumé

Energy Secretary Chris Wright announced the administration's openness to pausing the federal gas tax to alleviate high fuel costs, though the measure's impact may be limited.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated on Sunday that the Trump administration is open to suspending the federal gasoline tax to provide relief from escalating fuel prices. Speaking on NBC's "Meet the Press," Wright emphasized the administration's support for measures aimed at reducing costs for Americans.

The federal gas tax currently stands at 18.4 cents per gallon for gasoline and 24.4 cents for diesel. With the national average gas price at $4.52 per gallon, suspending the tax would lower the average price to approximately $4.34 per gallon. However, this reduction may offer limited relief, especially for lower-income individuals most affected by rising fuel costs.

President Trump has previously assured that high gas prices would be "short-term," but Wright acknowledged that prices could remain elevated for months, even after the conflict with Iran concludes. He noted that resuming free flow of traffic through the Strait of Hormuz would help decrease energy prices. Currently, ship traffic through the strait is obstructed by blockades from both sides of the conflict.
