Péter Magyar Sworn In as Hungary's Prime Minister, Ending Orbán's 16-Year Rule
Péter Magyar has been inaugurated as Hungary's new prime minister, concluding Viktor Orbán's 16-year tenure and initiating a new political era.
Péter Magyar was inaugurated as Hungary's new prime minister on May 9, 2026, marking the end of Viktor Orbán's 16-year tenure. Magyar's center-right Tisza party achieved a historic victory over Orbán's Fidesz party, securing a two-thirds majority in parliament.
In his inaugural address to tens of thousands gathered outside the parliament building, Magyar emphasized unity and democratic renewal. He stated, "Today, every freedom-loving person in the world wants to be a little Hungarian."
Magyar has pledged to restore democratic institutions, combat corruption, and improve Hungary’s strained relationship with the European Union. His government intends to unlock €17 billion in frozen EU funds and reduce Russian influence.
The Tisza party's victory also led to a significant increase in female parliamentary representation, marking a shift from Orbán’s male-dominated governance.
Magyar has called for the resignation of Fidesz-appointed officials and announced plans to investigate misuse of public funds through a new asset recovery office. Additionally, he aims to neutralize state media until it becomes objective.
This transition signals a major political and ideological shift for Hungary, with a focus on transparency, justice, and integration with the West.
