Hantavirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship MV Hondius: Evacuations and International Response

The MV Hondius, a Dutch-flagged cruise ship, is navigating towards Spain's Canary Islands following a hantavirus outbreak that has led to three fatalities among its passengers. The vessel, carrying 147 individuals, is expected to arrive at the port of Granadilla in Tenerife between 4:00 and 6:00 AM on Saturday.

Spanish Health Minister Mónica García stated that upon arrival, passengers will be assessed for symptoms, with Spanish nationals disembarking first. She emphasized that no new contacts have been identified in Spain, and the risk to the general population remains low.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that the outbreak involves the Andes strain of hantavirus, which, in rare instances, can transmit between humans. Despite this, the WHO assesses the risk to the global population as low.

Evacuation procedures are underway, with two crew members and one individual who had contact with a confirmed case being airlifted to the Netherlands for medical care. The ship's operator, Oceanwide Expeditions, reported that there are currently no symptomatic individuals on board.

The Canary Islands' regional authorities have expressed concerns about the ship's docking, citing a lack of consultation and potential health risks. However, Spain's central government maintains that the repatriation plan is safe and legally grounded.

Hantavirus is primarily transmitted through contact with infected rodent excreta and is not easily spread between humans. Symptoms typically appear between one and eight weeks after exposure.
