British Authorities Report New Suspected Hantavirus Case Linked to Cruise Ship Outbreak

Summary

A British man on Tristan da Cunha is the latest suspected hantavirus case connected to the MV Hondius cruise ship outbreak, as the vessel heads to the Canary Islands.

British health authorities have identified a new suspected case of hantavirus linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship outbreak. The individual, a British man currently on the remote South Atlantic island of Tristan da Cunha, is under medical observation. This development follows the World Health Organization's announcement that a KLM flight attendant hospitalized with symptoms tested negative for the virus.

The MV Hondius, carrying nearly 150 passengers from 23 countries, including 17 Americans, departed Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1, 2026, for the Canary Islands. The voyage included stops in Antarctica, South Georgia, Nightingale Island, Tristan da Cunha, St. Helena, and Ascension Island. The ship is currently off the coast of West Africa, en route to the Canary Islands, where it has been granted permission to dock. Passengers are isolating in their cabins, and medical teams equipped with protective gear are onboard.

To date, there have been three confirmed cases and five suspected cases of hantavirus associated with the outbreak, resulting in three deaths. Professor Robin May, chief scientific officer at the UK Health Security Agency, commented on the extensive contact tracing efforts:

“It’s been quite a mammoth effort. We will continue to do that if other information arises.”

The Andes strain of hantavirus, identified in this outbreak, is known for its potential person-to-person transmission, though such cases are rare. Symptoms typically emerge within one to two weeks and can include fever, muscle aches, and respiratory issues. There is no specific treatment for hantavirus infections; patients receive supportive care such as supplemental oxygen and dialysis if necessary.

The situation continues to evolve as health authorities monitor and respond to new developments.
