Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi in Beijing, advocating for a comprehensive ceasefire and emphasizing the importance of dialogue to resolve the ongoing US-Iran conflict.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Beijing on Wednesday, emphasizing the urgent need for a comprehensive ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran.

"We believe that a comprehensive ceasefire is urgently needed, that a resumption of hostilities is not acceptable, and that it is particularly important to remain committed to dialogue and negotiations," Wang stated during the meeting.

The discussions took place ahead of a scheduled summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on May 14 and 15. The U.S. has been urging China to leverage its influence over Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global energy shipments that Iran has effectively closed amid the conflict.

China, as Iran's largest oil buyer, has significant economic interests in the region and has previously played a role in mediating Middle Eastern conflicts. Analysts suggest that Beijing's involvement could be pivotal in de-escalating tensions and facilitating negotiations between the U.S. and Iran.

Araghchi's visit to Beijing underscores Iran's desire to secure diplomatic backing from China, especially in light of the upcoming U.S.-China summit. The timing of the visit indicates Tehran's interest in understanding Beijing's stance and seeking assurances that China's discussions with the U.S. will not compromise Iranian interests.

The meeting also highlighted China's criticism of the U.S. and Israeli military actions against Iran, which Wang described as "illegitimate." He emphasized the importance of regional stability and the need for all parties to engage in direct dialogue to resolve the conflict.

As the situation in the Strait of Hormuz continues to impact global energy markets, the international community is closely watching China's diplomatic efforts and their potential to influence the course of the U.S.-Iran conflict.
