Russian Strikes Kill 22 in Ukraine Ahead of Proposed Ceasefires

Russian drone and missile attacks across Ukraine have resulted in at least 22 fatalities and over 80 injuries, according to Ukrainian authorities. The strikes targeted cities including Kramatorsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Chernihiv, occurring shortly before Ukraine's announced ceasefire and days ahead of Russia's proposed pause in hostilities.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized Moscow for launching these attacks after declaring a unilateral ceasefire to commemorate the 81st anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II. He stated that Russia could cease fire at any moment to stop the war and that Ukraine would respond in kind.
The Russian Defense Ministry announced a unilateral ceasefire for May 8-9 but warned of retaliatory strikes if Ukraine attempted to disrupt Victory Day celebrations. In response, Zelenskyy declared a ceasefire starting at the end of Tuesday, without specifying an end date.
U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the unilateral ceasefires and called for their successful implementation, reiterating the need for a full, immediate, unconditional, and lasting ceasefire leading to a just and sustainable peace.
Despite these declarations, Russian forces launched 11 Iskander-M ballistic missiles and 164 drones at Ukraine overnight, targeting energy infrastructure and other facilities. Ukrainian air defense units intercepted 149 drones and one missile, but some attacks resulted in casualties and damage.
In retaliation, Ukraine intensified its long-range attacks on Russian territory, targeting oil facilities and military-industrial plants with drones and cruise missiles. These strikes reportedly injured civilians in Cheboksary and caused fires in Kirishi.
Zelenskyy, during a visit to Bahrain, proposed a drone defense collaboration with Gulf states, emphasizing shared experiences with drone warfare. The international community, including the U.N., continues to call for a lasting and genuine ceasefire in line with international law.
