China Calls for Comprehensive Ceasefire in Iran Conflict

Résumé

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urges an immediate and full ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran, emphasizing the need for dialogue and negotiations.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran. During a meeting in Beijing with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Wang expressed deep concern over the two-month-long hostilities and emphasized the urgency of returning to dialogue and negotiations.

Wang stated that the conflict has caused significant losses to the Iranian people and adversely affected regional and global peace. He highlighted China's close economic and political ties with Tehran, positioning Beijing to play a unique role in influencing the situation.

The meeting comes ahead of a planned summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on May 14-15. The summit is expected to address the Iran conflict among other issues.

In related developments, President Trump announced a pause in the U.S. operation, dubbed Project Freedom, which aimed to guide commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. This decision follows mediation efforts by Pakistan and other countries, aiming to facilitate a peaceful resolution.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran has led to disruptions in global oil and gas supplies, causing fuel prices to rise and impacting the global economy. The spot price of Brent crude oil has recently fallen to around $100 per barrel, easing from earlier spikes but still above pre-conflict levels.

China's call for a ceasefire aligns with its broader diplomatic efforts to promote peace and stability in the region. The Chinese Foreign Ministry has reiterated the importance of resolving conflicts through dialogue and has been actively engaging with relevant parties to de-escalate tensions.
