U.S. Affirms Iran Ceasefire Holds Amid Strait of Hormuz Clashes
Despite recent exchanges in the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. officials maintain that the ceasefire with Iran remains intact.
The United States has confirmed that the ceasefire with Iran remains in effect, despite recent clashes in the Strait of Hormuz. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the U.S. mission to protect commercial shipping in the strait is temporary and that the ceasefire is still in place.
The U.S. military launched "Project Freedom" to escort commercial vessels through the strait, aiming to counter Iran's control over this critical waterway. During the operation, U.S. forces repelled attacks from Iranian drones, missiles, and small boats, successfully escorting two merchant ships.
Iran has denied that any commercial vessels have successfully transited the strait and has vowed to use force against unauthorized maritime movements. Iranian officials have also warned the U.S. against being drawn into a "quagmire" in the region.
The United Arab Emirates reported intercepting multiple missiles and drones fired from Iran, which caused a fire at an oil facility and injured three individuals. Despite these incidents, U.S. officials assert that the ceasefire holds and that the current military actions are defensive in nature.
