Secret Service Engages Armed Suspect Near Washington Monument; Bystander Injured
A man was shot by Secret Service officers near the Washington Monument after opening fire; a juvenile bystander sustained minor injuries.
On Monday afternoon, a man was shot by U.S. Secret Service officers near the Washington Monument after he opened fire on them. Plainclothes agents had identified the suspect around 3:30 p.m. near the White House, observing what appeared to be a firearm imprint. When uniformed officers approached, the man attempted to flee and fired at them, prompting law enforcement to return fire. The suspect was transported to a local hospital; his condition remains unknown.
A juvenile bystander was also injured during the exchange. Emergency services treated the minor for non-life-threatening injuries.
The incident led to a brief lockdown of the White House, where President Donald Trump was attending a small business event. The event proceeded without interruption.
Vice President JD Vance's motorcade had passed through the area shortly before the shooting. Authorities have stated there is no indication that the vice president was targeted.
This event follows a recent security incident on April 25, when a gunman attempted to infiltrate the White House Correspondents' Association dinner, resulting in a Secret Service officer being wounded.
