Prime Minister Keir Starmer convenes leaders from various sectors to address increasing antisemitic incidents in the UK.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer is hosting a summit at Downing Street today with senior figures from business, culture, and policing to address the rise in antisemitic incidents across the UK. This initiative aims to implement a comprehensive "whole of society" approach to eradicate antisemitism.

Starmer emphasized the need for collective action, stating that merely expressing solidarity with Jewish communities is insufficient; concerted efforts are required across all sectors to eliminate antisemitism from every part of society.

The summit follows several suspected antisemitic attacks, including the stabbing of two Jewish men in Golders Green on April 29. In response, the Home Secretary, Communities Secretary, Health Secretary, Education Secretary, and Culture Secretary will each lead discussions with leaders from their respective sectors. These round-table meetings will include representatives from business, civil society, health, culture, higher education, and policing, along with members of the Jewish community. Participants will assess the manifestations of antisemitism within their sectors, review current countermeasures, and explore further actions.

In the afternoon, Starmer will convene a Middle East Response Committee meeting to address the domestic security implications of the Middle East conflict, particularly the increased threat to Jewish communities following recent attacks.

In his opening remarks, Starmer is expected to highlight the Golders Green attack as part of a broader pattern of rising antisemitism that has left Jewish communities feeling frightened and questioning their safety in the UK. He will stress that these attacks are a crisis for the entire nation and a test of shared values that must be upheld daily through collective actions.

The Golders Green incident resulted in charges against 45-year-old Essa Suleiman for three counts of attempted murder. Victims included 34-year-old Shloime Rand and 76-year-old Norman Shine, as well as a third man, Ishmail Hussein, who knew Suleiman and was attacked earlier the same day.

In October of the previous year, two Jewish individuals were killed, and three others were seriously injured in a car ramming and stabbing attack outside a synagogue in Manchester. One of the victims was fatally shot by police.

On April 30, the UK's terrorism threat level was elevated from "substantial" to "severe" for the first time in four years. Recent weeks have also seen arson attacks targeting Jewish community sites. On March 23, four ambulances belonging to the Jewish charity ambulance service Hatzola were set ablaze, leading to charges against three men and a teenager. Additionally, the Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest of two individuals on suspicion of arson related to an attack on a memorial wall in Golders Green earlier this month.
