Israel Implements Gaza-Style Tactics in Southern Lebanon Offensive

Summary

Israel's military has adopted tactics similar to those used in Gaza during its ground offensive in southern Lebanon, resulting in significant destruction and civilian displacement.

Israel's military has adopted tactics reminiscent of those used in Gaza during its ground offensive in southern Lebanon, leading to widespread destruction and civilian displacement. Satellite imagery and verified media depict extensive demolitions across at least two dozen towns and villages near the border, including Bint Jbeil, a Hezbollah stronghold. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have established a buffer zone several miles deep, aiming to occupy this area until the threat from Hezbollah is neutralized.

Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the approach mirrors the military's operations in Gaza, where entire neighborhoods were reduced to rubble. Since the conflict's resurgence in early March, Israeli strikes have resulted in over 2,600 fatalities in Lebanon, including journalists and medical workers, and have damaged critical infrastructure such as bridges, hospitals, and mosques. More than a million people have been displaced.

The Israeli military asserts that its operations target Hezbollah's infrastructure embedded within civilian areas. However, legal experts and human rights organizations express concern that the extensive destruction of civilian property without valid military justification may constitute war crimes. Ramzi Kaiss, a researcher at Human Rights Watch, emphasized that deliberate and extensive destruction of civilian objects or property, absent any military justification, is a war crime.

In response to the offensive, Hezbollah has launched hundreds of drones, rockets, and anti-tank missiles into Israel, resulting in at least 17 Israeli soldiers' deaths since early March. Despite a U.S.-mediated ceasefire extended through mid-May, hostilities persist, with both sides continuing military operations.

The conflict has led to significant civilian suffering, particularly in Shiite-majority villages in southern Lebanon. Satellite images reveal that towns like Aita al Shaab and Hanine have been reduced to expanses of gray rubble, while nearby predominantly Christian villages have sustained less damage. Displaced residents, such as Fatima Abdallah from Houla, express profound loss and uncertainty about returning to their homes, now reduced to rubble.
