Stranded Humpback Whale 'Timmy' Released into North Sea After Extensive Rescue Effort

Résumé

After weeks stranded in shallow Baltic waters, a humpback whale named 'Timmy' has been successfully transported and released into the North Sea.

A humpback whale nicknamed "Timmy" has been released into the North Sea after being stranded in shallow waters near Germany since March. The 12.35-meter-long whale was first spotted on March 3 near Germany's Baltic Sea coast, far from its typical Atlantic habitat. Despite multiple attempts to guide it back to deeper waters, Timmy repeatedly became stranded, exhibiting signs of distress such as irregular breathing and minimal movement. The whale's skin condition also deteriorated due to the Baltic's low salinity, prompting rescuers to apply zinc ointment.

The rescue operation, funded by two German entrepreneurs, involved transporting Timmy using a specially dredged channel and straps to load it onto a water-filled barge. On May 2, the whale was released from the barge 70 kilometers off Skagen, Denmark. A GPS tracker was attached to monitor its movement.

The International Whaling Commission (IWC) had previously criticized efforts to move Timmy, arguing that such interventions impose considerable additional stress on an already gravely ill creature, with little ultimate benefit. After the release, the IWC acknowledged the considerable technical, logistical, and financial effort the rescue required but warned that this was not necessarily a fairytale ending to Timmy's story.

The case drew significant public and media attention, with live coverage and widespread discussion of the whale's wellbeing. It remains unclear why the whale ventured into the Baltic, though some suggest it followed herring or became disoriented during migration.
