The Onion's Bid to Transform Infowars into Satirical Platform Faces Legal Hurdles

Summary

The Onion's attempt to acquire Infowars and rebrand it as a satirical site encounters legal challenges, with comedian Tim Heidecker poised to lead the transformation.

The satirical news outlet The Onion is pursuing the acquisition of Infowars, the right-wing media platform founded by Alex Jones, with plans to rebrand it as a parody site. Comedian Tim Heidecker is set to serve as the creative director for this transformation.

In 2022, Jones was ordered to pay $1.4 billion in defamation damages to the families of the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting victims, following his false claims that the tragedy was a hoax. To satisfy this judgment, Infowars' parent company was mandated to liquidate assets.

The Onion's parent company, Global Tetrahedron, initially won a court-ordered auction to purchase Infowars in November 2024. However, a U.S. bankruptcy judge later halted the sale, citing concerns that the auction did not yield the best possible bids.

In April 2026, Global Tetrahedron proposed a six-month lease agreement to operate Infowars for $81,000 per month, with an option to renew. This arrangement aims to generate funds to help satisfy Jones's debt obligations.

Heidecker envisions transforming Infowars into a platform that satirizes its previous content. He stated, "One of my first thoughts is just what a great joke it would be, over time, if we could change the meaning and understanding of the site itself."

The proposed lease is pending approval from a Texas court, with a hearing scheduled for May 28. If approved, the revamped Infowars will feature satirical content, including parodies of conspiracy theories and advertisements for fictitious products.

Jones has publicly opposed the takeover, alleging that Heidecker produced content promoting harmful themes. In response, Heidecker remarked, "I’m happy to confirm all of that with you," noting that he had recently "pledged my allegiance to the Lord of Darkness" on his podcast.

The Onion's initiative aims to repurpose Infowars into a platform that undermines the conspiracy theories it once propagated, marking a significant shift in its content and mission.
