UK Raises Terror Threat Level to 'Severe' Following Golders Green Stabbing

Resumen

A stabbing attack in London's Golders Green neighborhood has led the UK to elevate its terror threat level to 'severe,' indicating a highly likely risk of further attacks.

The United Kingdom has raised its national terror threat level from 'substantial' to 'severe' following a stabbing incident in Golders Green, London, that left two Jewish men injured. The attack occurred on April 29, 2026, in a neighborhood known for its significant Jewish community.

The suspect, 45-year-old Essa Suleiman, a British national born in Somalia, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder related to the Golders Green stabbings, as well as a third count of attempted murder for a separate incident earlier the same day. He also faces a charge of possessing a bladed article in a public place. Suleiman appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court but did not enter a plea; his case is scheduled for a May 15 hearing at the Central Criminal Court.

In response to the attack and a series of recent antisemitic incidents, including arson attacks targeting synagogues, the UK government convened an emergency COBR meeting. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood described the Golders Green stabbing as an 'abhorrent, antisemitic attack' and announced an increase in the national threat level to 'severe,' indicating that a terrorist attack is highly likely.

The government has also allocated an additional £25 million to enhance security measures for Jewish communities, bringing the total funding to £58 million for the year. This funding aims to bolster police presence and protective security at synagogues, schools, and community centers.

Community leaders have expressed deep concern over the rising tide of antisemitic violence. Dov Forman, a 22-year-old author and activist from Golders Green, stated, 'No one here is shocked or surprised that this has happened. We all knew after previous attacks that this was not a question of if there would be another attack, but simply when.'

Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attack, stating, 'The antisemitic attack in Golders Green is utterly appalling. Attacks on our Jewish community are attacks on Britain.'

The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that Suleiman was referred to the government's Prevent program in 2020, which aims to deter individuals from engaging in extremism; however, his case was closed the same year.

The UK was last at a 'severe' threat level in November 2021, following the Liverpool Women's Hospital bombing and the murder of Sir David Amess, before being lowered to 'substantial' in February 2022.
