UK Elevates Terror Threat Level to 'Severe' After Golders Green Stabbings

Résumé

Following the stabbing of two Jewish men in Golders Green, the UK has raised its terror threat level to 'severe', indicating a highly likely attack.

The United Kingdom has increased its national terror threat level from 'substantial' to 'severe' after two Jewish men were stabbed in Golders Green, north London, on Wednesday. The 'severe' designation indicates that a terrorist attack is considered highly likely.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood described the attack as a 'vile act of terrorism' and acknowledged the concern it may cause, particularly within the Jewish community. She emphasized the government's commitment to combating antisemitism and announced increased investment to protect Jewish communities, including enhanced security at synagogues, schools, and community centers.

The Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) stated that the decision to raise the threat level was not solely due to the Golders Green incident but also reflects a broader increase in Islamist and extreme right-wing terrorist threats from individuals and small groups within the UK. The 'severe' level is the second-highest on the UK's five-tier scale, last reached in 2021 following the Liverpool Women's Hospital bombing and the killing of lawmaker David Amess.

The two victims, aged 34 and 76, are reported to be in stable condition. A 45-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the attack and remains in police custody. The incident has been declared a terrorist act, and investigations are ongoing.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited Golders Green on Thursday, expressing the government's determination to eradicate antisemitism. He announced an additional £25 million investment in police patrols and security measures to safeguard Jewish communities. However, during his visit, Starmer faced protests from individuals criticizing the government's response to rising antisemitic violence.

Authorities are also investigating potential links between recent antisemitic incidents and state-sponsored groups. Security experts have warned of heightened threats from both Islamist and far-right extremists, underscoring the need for vigilance and comprehensive measures to protect all communities.
