U.S. Gas Prices Reach $4.23 Amid Ongoing Strait of Hormuz Disruptions

The national average price for a gallon of gasoline in the United States has risen to $4.23, marking a significant increase since the onset of the conflict in Iran. This surge is closely linked to the disruption of oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passageway that typically handles about 20% of the world's oil supply.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, has escalated to approximately $108 per barrel for July delivery, up from around $72 before the conflict began. Similarly, West Texas Intermediate crude, the U.S. benchmark, has surpassed $103 per barrel for June delivery.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has led to a substantial reduction in global oil production. The U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates that production shut-ins reached 9.1 million barrels per day in April.

The rise in fuel prices is placing additional financial strain on consumers, particularly those with lower incomes. Analysts at Bank of America noted that higher gasoline prices are stretching household budgets, with the greatest impact on lower-income consumers.

In the financial markets, the S&P 500 index remains near record highs, supported by strong earnings from major companies. European stocks, however, have experienced slight declines, with the Stoxx 600 index shedding about a third of a percentage point.

The ongoing situation underscores the interconnectedness of global energy markets and the potential for geopolitical events to influence economic conditions worldwide.
