Russia to Hold Scaled-Down Victory Day Parade Amid Security Concerns
For the first time in nearly two decades, Russia's Victory Day parade on May 9 will proceed without military hardware, citing security concerns and operational challenges.
Russia's upcoming Victory Day parade on May 9 will proceed without the traditional display of military hardware, including tanks, missiles, and other equipment, marking the first such occurrence in nearly 20 years. The Russian Defense Ministry attributed this decision to the "current operational situation" and heightened security concerns, particularly in light of recent Ukrainian drone strikes deep within Russian territory.
Victory Day, commemorating the Soviet Union's triumph over Nazi Germany in World War II, has historically served as a platform for Russia to showcase its military strength and bolster national pride. Since 2008, the parade in Moscow's Red Square has regularly featured an array of military equipment. This year's event will instead include troops from military institutions and a limited aerial display.
The decision to scale down the parade reflects both security risks and logistical challenges, such as preserving military assets amid ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov cited Ukrainian "terrorist activity" as a factor influencing the change.
Ukrainian forces have intensified drone strikes targeting key sites within Russia, exposing vulnerabilities deep inside the country. Additionally, Russia has faced challenges in replenishing its troop numbers amid the protracted conflict in the Donbas region.
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as of April 27, 2026, Russia has incurred approximately 1,326,460 personnel losses, along with significant equipment losses, including 11,892 tanks and 40,737 artillery systems.
