German Chancellor Criticizes U.S. Strategy in Iran Conflict
Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticizes U.S. handling of Iran conflict, prompting response from President Donald Trump.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has criticized the United States' approach to the ongoing conflict in Iran, suggesting that the U.S. is being "humiliated" by Tehran's leadership. Speaking to students in Marsberg, Merz stated that the U.S. lacks a clear strategy and is being outmaneuvered by Iran, particularly by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
In response, U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed Merz's remarks, asserting that the German chancellor "doesn't know what he's talking about" and emphasizing that the military campaign is necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
Merz's comments reflect growing tensions between the U.S. and its European allies over the Iran conflict. European nations have been reluctant to support the U.S.-led military campaign, with some, like Spain, even closing their airspace to U.S. forces.
The ongoing conflict has also had economic repercussions for Germany. The ifo Institute has revised its growth forecast for Germany downward, expecting only a 0.8% increase in GDP for 2026, citing the energy price shock triggered by the Iran war as a significant factor dampening recovery.
