AI Stock Declines and Rising Oil Prices Impact Wall Street Performance

Resumen

Wall Street's record-setting rally was interrupted as AI stocks declined and oil prices surged due to Middle East tensions.

Wall Street's record-setting rally faced a setback on Tuesday as declines in artificial intelligence (AI) stocks and rising oil prices influenced market performance. The S&P 500 slipped 0.5% from its latest all-time high, while the Nasdaq composite fell 1%. In contrast, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, with less emphasis on technology stocks, edged up 0.2%.

AI-related companies led the downturn. Nvidia, a key player in AI chip production, dropped 2.8%, becoming the heaviest weight on the S&P 500. Oracle fell 4.9%, and CoreWeave declined 6.3%. This trend followed a report indicating concerns among OpenAI leaders about sustaining investments in data centers after missing user and revenue targets.

The market also reacted to a surge in oil prices, with Brent crude climbing 2.9% to $111.31 per barrel for June delivery. This increase is attributed to ongoing tensions in the Middle East, particularly the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil shipping route. The U.S. administration appeared unlikely to accept Iran's offer to end the conflict and reopen the strait if the U.S. lifts its blockade.

Despite these challenges, Coca-Cola reported stronger-than-expected profits and revenue for the latest quarter, driven by robust sales in China, the United States, and India. Its stock rose 5.1%. Additionally, oil companies benefited from the rise in crude prices, with Exxon Mobil gaining 1.7% and ConocoPhillips rising 1.2%.

In the bond market, Treasury yields ticked higher alongside rising oil prices. The yield on the 10-year Treasury edged up to 4.36% from 4.35% late Monday. The Federal Reserve is scheduled to meet Wednesday, with expectations to hold short-term interest rates steady. Additionally, the Senate Banking Committee is set to vote on the nomination of Kevin Warsh to succeed Jerome Powell as Fed Chair.

Internationally, stock indexes mostly fell in Europe and Asia. Japan's Nikkei 225 declined 1% after the Bank of Japan opted to keep its key interest rate unchanged, citing various risks to the economic outlook, including the situation in the Middle East.
