First Lady Melania Trump and President Donald Trump have called for ABC to fire comedian Jimmy Kimmel following a joke he made about the First Lady during a mock White House Correspondents' Dinner segment.
In a recent episode of "Jimmy Kimmel Live," Kimmel performed a skit parodying the White House Correspondents' Dinner, during which he referred to Melania Trump as having "the glow of an expectant widow." This remark was made prior to an actual security incident at the Correspondents' Dinner, where an armed individual was arrested.
Melania Trump responded on social media, stating, "Kimmel's hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country. His monologue about my family isn't comedy—his words are corrosive and deepen the political sickness within America." She urged ABC to take action against Kimmel, emphasizing that individuals like him "shouldn't have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate."
President Donald Trump echoed his wife's sentiments, posting on Truth Social that Kimmel's comments were "despicable" and called for his immediate dismissal by Disney and ABC.
Kimmel addressed the controversy on his show, clarifying that his joke was a satirical commentary on the age difference between the Trumps and not an incitement to violence. He expressed sympathy for those affected by the security incident at the Correspondents' Dinner and defended his routine as a form of satire.
This incident adds to the ongoing tension between the Trumps and Kimmel, who has been a vocal critic of the administration. Previously, Kimmel faced a temporary suspension from ABC after making controversial remarks about conservative activist Charlie Kirk, though he was later reinstated.
ABC has not issued a public statement regarding the current controversy.
