Iran Faces Deepening Economic Crisis Amidst Ongoing Conflict and Sanctions

Iran's economy is undergoing significant deterioration, exacerbated by ongoing conflict, international sanctions, and internal mismanagement. Inflation has surged, with food prices increasing by over 100% in the past year, severely impacting household budgets. The Iranian rial has depreciated sharply, trading at over 1.4 million against the US dollar as of January 2026.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran in response to a U.S. blockade has disrupted global oil supplies, intensifying the energy crisis. Iranian forces have fired on several commercial vessels, including two India-flagged ships, drawing international concern.
