NTSB Report Highlights Communication Failures in Fatal LaGuardia Collision

Ամփոփում

A preliminary NTSB report identifies communication lapses and equipment deficiencies as contributing factors in the March 22 collision at LaGuardia Airport that resulted in two fatalities.

A preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has identified multiple factors contributing to the fatal collision at New York's LaGuardia Airport on March 22, where an Air Canada Express jet collided with a fire truck, resulting in the deaths of both pilots and injuries to 39 individuals.

The report highlights that the fire truck, responding to an emergency involving another aircraft, was cleared by an air traffic controller to cross an active runway just 12 seconds before the Air Canada jet landed. Despite the clearance, illuminated stoplights were active, indicating that the truck should not have entered the runway. Additionally, the fire truck lacked a transponder, which prevented the airport's ground surveillance system from accurately tracking its position and predicting potential conflicts.

The NTSB also noted that the air traffic control tower was operating with only two controllers at the time, who were managing multiple duties due to an unrelated emergency, leading to a high workload. This staffing situation may have contributed to the miscommunication and oversight that led to the collision.

The investigation is ongoing, with the NTSB continuing to examine the sequence of events and contributing factors to prevent similar incidents in the future.
