Kalshi Suspends Three Political Candidates for Betting on Own Races

Resumen

Prediction market Kalshi has suspended three political candidates for wagering on their own election outcomes, citing violations of platform rules against insider trading.

Prediction market platform Kalshi has suspended three political candidates for betting on their own election outcomes, citing violations of the platform's insider trading rules. The candidates involved are Mark Moran, an independent running for U.S. Senate in Virginia; Ezekiel Enriquez, a former Republican congressional candidate in Texas; and Matt Klein, a Democratic Minnesota state senator running for Congress.

Kalshi's head of enforcement and legal counsel, Bobby DeNault, stated that these actions are part of the company's efforts to identify and prevent illicit trading activity.

The sanctions include five-year suspensions from the platform and fines: Moran was fined over $6,200 after refusing to settle and demanding public recognition, calling his actions a protest against platform influence; Klein and Enriquez settled, with fines of $530 and $780, respectively.

Klein admitted to placing a $50 bet on his own primary race out of curiosity and acknowledged it was a mistake, emphasizing the need for clearer regulations.

These enforcement actions come amid growing scrutiny from lawmakers and regulators over how political betting is policed, with concerns about the integrity of elections and the potential for insider trading on prediction markets.
