Iran Attacks Ships in Strait of Hormuz Amid U.S. Ceasefire Extension

Iran's Revolutionary Guard fired upon and seized commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions despite a U.S. ceasefire extension.

Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard attacked at least three commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, seizing two of them, shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump extended a ceasefire with Iran.

The British military's United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that a container ship was approached by an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) gunboat, which fired upon the vessel without warning, causing significant damage to the bridge. All crew members were reported safe.

Iranian media identified the seized vessels as the MSC Francesca and the Epaminondas. A third ship, the Euphoria, was reportedly stranded on Iran's coast. The IRGC stated that the ships were targeted for allegedly ignoring repeated warnings while passing through the strategic waterway.

These incidents occurred after President Trump announced an indefinite extension of the ceasefire with Iran, aiming to provide Tehran time to present a "unified proposal" ahead of potential negotiations. However, Iranian officials have expressed that the ceasefire extension "means nothing" without the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime chokepoint through which approximately 20% of the world's traded oil passes. The recent attacks have heightened concerns over global energy supplies and have further complicated diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran.
