Gates Foundation Initiates Review of Epstein Ties and Plans Staff Reductions

Resumen

The Gates Foundation is conducting an external review of its past interactions with Jeffrey Epstein and plans to reduce its workforce by up to 20% over the next several years.

The Gates Foundation has announced an external review of its past interactions with the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Concurrently, the foundation plans to reduce its workforce by up to 500 positions, approximately 20% of its staff, over the next several years.

In a memo to staff, CEO Mark Suzman emphasized the importance of these actions, stating, "This is a challenging time for our organization in many ways, but it also highlights the critical importance of taking the tough actions now."

The foundation, established in 2000 by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and his then-wife Melinda, is one of the world's largest funders of global health initiatives.

In February, Bill Gates addressed the foundation's staff regarding his association with Epstein, acknowledging that meetings with Epstein were "a huge mistake" and apologizing for involving foundation executives in those meetings.

The foundation has stated that, based on Epstein's claims of being able to mobilize significant philanthropic resources, a small number of employees interacted with him to explore potential funding opportunities. However, no collaboration was pursued, no fund was created, and no financial payments were made to Epstein. The foundation expressed regret over any interactions with Epstein.

Epstein, who pleaded guilty in 2008 to soliciting a minor for prostitution, died by suicide in August 2019 while awaiting trial on federal charges related to sex trafficking.

Berkshire Hathaway Chairman Warren Buffett, a significant donor to the Gates Foundation, stated in March that he has not spoken to Bill Gates since details of Epstein's communications with Gates were revealed. Buffett expressed a desire to avoid being in a position where he might be called as a witness.
