The Onion to Lease Infowars for Satirical Overhaul
The Onion plans to lease Alex Jones's Infowars for $81,000 monthly, aiming to transform it into a parody platform.
Satirical news outlet The Onion is set to lease Alex Jones's Infowars platform for $81,000 per month over six months, with an option to extend for another six months. This arrangement, pending approval from Texas Judge Maya Guerra Gamble, aims to repurpose Infowars into a parody site.
The Onion's parent company, Global Tetrahedron, will oversee the transformation, with comedian Tim Heidecker appointed as creative director. Heidecker expressed his vision to "parody Jones's whole modus operandi," aiming to rebrand Infowars into a platform for creative expression.
This initiative follows a series of legal challenges for Jones, who was ordered to pay $1.4 billion in defamation damages to the families of Sandy Hook victims. Infowars' parent company, Free Speech Systems, declared bankruptcy in 2022, leading to the current restructuring efforts.
The proposed lease is subject to judicial approval, with Judge Gamble expected to rule on the matter in the coming weeks. Jones retains the right to appeal any decision.
