Asteroid Apophis to Make Historic Close Approach to Earth in 2029

Resumen

On April 13, 2029, asteroid Apophis will pass within 20,000 miles of Earth, offering a unique opportunity for scientific observation.

Asteroid Apophis, measuring approximately 1,115 feet (340 meters) in diameter, is set to make a close approach to Earth on April 13, 2029. The asteroid will pass about 20,000 miles (32,000 kilometers) from Earth's surface, closer than many geosynchronous satellites.

Discovered in 2004, Apophis was initially considered a potential impact threat. However, subsequent observations have ruled out any risk of collision for at least the next century.

The 2029 flyby presents a rare opportunity for scientific study. NASA's OSIRIS-APEX mission, a continuation of the OSIRIS-REx mission, is planned to rendezvous with Apophis shortly after its close approach to conduct an 18-month study of the asteroid's surface and composition.

Observers in the Eastern Hemisphere will be able to see Apophis with the naked eye during its approach, weather permitting.
