Eight Children Killed in Shreveport Domestic Shooting; Suspect Dead
A domestic shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, resulted in the deaths of eight children and the suspect, with two women injured.
In Shreveport, Louisiana, a tragic domestic shooting on Sunday morning resulted in the deaths of eight children, aged between 3 and 11, and left two women injured. The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Shamar Elkins, was killed by police following a pursuit.
The incident began around 5:00 a.m. when Elkins allegedly shot a woman on Harrison Street, critically injuring her. He then proceeded to a residence on West 79th Street, where he fatally shot eight children. Seven of the victims were his own children, and the eighth was a cousin. Another woman was also shot and sustained life-threatening injuries. A teenage boy managed to escape by jumping from the roof, suffering broken bones but no gunshot wounds.
After the shootings, Elkins fled the scene, carjacked a vehicle, and led police on a chase into Bossier City. The pursuit ended when officers confronted Elkins on Brompton Lane, resulting in an exchange of gunfire that led to his death. No officers were injured during the confrontation.
Authorities have indicated that the shootings were domestic in nature, linked to Elkins' ongoing separation from his wife, with whom he shared four children. The couple was scheduled for a court appearance on Monday. Elkins had a prior firearms arrest in 2019 but no known history of domestic violence.
Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux described the event as "a tragic situation, maybe the worst tragic situation we've had." The community is mourning the loss, with officials and residents expressing shock and heartbreak over the devastating incident.
