Gaza Freedom Flotilla Leader Faces Sexual Misconduct Allegations

Summary

Thiago Ávila, a senior member of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, is accused of engaging in sexual relations with multiple activists during a voyage to Gaza, prompting an internal investigation.

The Gaza Freedom Flotilla, which set sail from Barcelona on April 12, 2026, has been embroiled in controversy following allegations of sexual misconduct against a senior member of its steering committee. The Palestinian group Heart of Falastin reported that the individual, identified as Brazilian activist Thiago Ávila, engaged in sexual relations with multiple activists during the voyage to Gaza.

In response to these allegations, the Global Sumud Flotilla's independent Ethics Committee conducted an expedited investigation. The committee interviewed the three women involved, all of whom denied that any sexual misconduct occurred. Consequently, the Ethics Committee considers the case closed.

Thiago Ávila has not directly commented on the allegations but has shared the Ethics Committee's statement on social media. He also reposted messages of support from fellow activists, including Lisi Proença and Sümeyra Akdeniz Ordu, who criticized media coverage of the incident.

This is not the first time Ávila has faced scrutiny. In June 2025, he attended the funeral of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and expressed admiration for him, stating he was "inspired" by Nasrallah's actions. Additionally, Ávila participated in the September 2025 Global Sumud Flotilla, which garnered attention after climate activist Greta Thunberg was removed from its steering committee due to internal disagreements.

The recent flotilla has also faced criticism for organizing a large festival on the day of its launch, featuring concerts and workshops. Some activists expressed concerns that such events could create a disconnect between the mission's political objectives and the realities on the ground in Gaza.
