Iran Reimposes Strait of Hormuz Closure Amid U.S. Port Blockade

Iran has reinstated restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime passage through which approximately 20% of the world's oil trade flows, in response to the ongoing U.S. blockade of its ports. This move has heightened regional tensions and raised concerns over global energy supplies.

The Iranian military announced the closure, stating that control over the strait has "returned to its previous state." Reports indicate that Iranian gunboats fired upon a merchant vessel attempting to navigate the waterway. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) described the U.S. blockade as "acts of piracy and maritime theft," emphasizing that control over the strait is "under the strict management and control of the armed forces." The IRGC further stated that the strait would remain closed until the U.S. lifts its blockade on Iranian ports.

This development follows a brief reopening of the strait after a U.S.-mediated 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. However, after U.S. President Donald Trump affirmed that the blockade would persist until a deal is reached, Iran reinstated the closure. The U.S. military's Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that no ships "made it past" the blockade in its first 24 hours, with six merchant vessels turning back.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz poses significant risks to global oil supply routes and threatens to derail diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving ongoing conflicts. Pakistani mediators are working to arrange another round of direct negotiations between the U.S. and Iran to address the escalating situation.
