Joseph diGenova Appointed to Lead DOJ Investigation into Former CIA Director John Brennan
The Justice Department has appointed Joseph diGenova to oversee the criminal investigation into former CIA Director John Brennan, following the removal of lead prosecutor Maria Medetis Long.
The U.S. Department of Justice has appointed Joseph diGenova, a former U.S. Attorney and conservative attorney, to lead the ongoing criminal investigation into former CIA Director John Brennan. This appointment follows the recent removal of lead prosecutor Maria Medetis Long from the case.
DiGenova, who served as U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia from 1983 to 1988, has been a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump and previously represented his campaign during challenges to the 2020 election results. He will oversee the probe from the Southern District of Florida and serve as counselor to acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.
Maria Medetis Long, the former lead prosecutor and head of the national security section at the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida, was removed from the case after expressing concerns about the strength of the evidence against Brennan. A Justice Department spokesperson stated that personnel changes are "healthy and normal" without elaborating on the specific reasons for her removal.
The investigation into Brennan was initiated following a referral from the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee, alleging that Brennan provided false testimony to Congress regarding the CIA's role in the 2016 intelligence assessment of Russian election interference. Brennan and his legal team have denied any wrongdoing.
The appointment of diGenova, known for promoting conspiracy theories about the Department of Justice and the FBI, has raised concerns about the potential politicization of the case. The Justice Department has not commented on these concerns.
