Iran Reimposes Strait of Hormuz Restrictions, Fires on Tanker Amid U.S. Blockade

摘要

Iran has reinstated strict controls over the Strait of Hormuz, firing on a tanker in response to the ongoing U.S. blockade of its ports, escalating tensions and threatening global oil supply.

Iran has reinstated strict controls over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime passage, in response to the ongoing U.S. blockade of its ports. On Saturday, Iranian Revolutionary Guard gunboats fired upon a tanker transiting the strait. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center reported that the vessel and its crew were unharmed but did not disclose the ship's identity or destination.

This development follows Iran's brief reopening of the strait on Friday, which was reversed after U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the American blockade would persist until a comprehensive agreement, including Iran's nuclear program, is reached. Iran's joint military command announced that control of the Strait of Hormuz has returned to its previous state under strict management by the armed forces.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital conduit for approximately 20% of the world's oil supply. The reimposition of restrictions and the recent attack on a commercial vessel have heightened concerns over global energy security and the potential for escalating conflict in the region.

Despite these tensions, diplomatic efforts continue. Pakistani officials have indicated that the United States and Iran are moving closer to a deal ahead of the April 22 ceasefire deadline. However, Iran has stated it will maintain full control over traffic through the Strait of Hormuz until the U.S. blockade is lifted.
