White House Engages Anthropic CEO Amid AI Model Concerns

White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles met with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on Friday to discuss the company's latest artificial intelligence model, Mythos. The meeting aimed to explore potential collaborations and address the model's implications for national security and the economy.

A White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the administration is engaging with advanced AI labs to assess their models and software security. The official emphasized that any new technology considered for federal use would undergo a thorough evaluation period.

Anthropic described the meeting as productive, highlighting discussions on shared priorities such as cybersecurity, maintaining America's lead in the AI race, and ensuring AI safety. The company expressed its commitment to continuing these discussions.

The meeting follows previous tensions between Anthropic and the Trump administration. The Pentagon had labeled Anthropic a "supply chain risk" after the company refused to make its software broadly available to the military. This designation led to legal disputes, with Anthropic challenging the Pentagon's decision in federal courts.

Anthropic's Mythos model, announced on April 7, is noted for its advanced capabilities, including surpassing human experts in identifying and exploiting computer vulnerabilities. Due to its potential impact, the model's release has been limited to select partners. International entities, such as the United Kingdom's AI Security Institute and the European Commission, have also shown interest in the model's capabilities.

In response to the challenges posed by powerful AI systems, Anthropic launched Project Glasswing, a coalition that includes major tech companies like Amazon, Apple, Google, and Microsoft, as well as organizations like JPMorgan Chase. The initiative aims to secure critical software infrastructure against potential risks associated with advanced AI models.

Industry experts have acknowledged the significance of Mythos. David Sacks, the White House's AI and crypto czar, commented on the model's capabilities, noting that as coding models become more advanced, they are increasingly capable of identifying and exploiting vulnerabilities.

The meeting between Wiles and Amodei signifies a potential shift toward collaboration between the federal government and Anthropic, focusing on balancing innovation with safety in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.
