Amazon's New Fire TV Sticks Restrict Sideloading of Apps

Summary

Amazon's latest Fire TV Stick models, running on the proprietary Vega OS, prevent the installation of apps from outside the Amazon Appstore.

Amazon's recent Fire TV Stick releases, including the Fire TV Stick 4K Select and the new Fire TV Stick HD, operate on the company's proprietary Vega OS. This shift from the Android-based Fire OS to Vega OS restricts users from sideloading applications not available in the Amazon Appstore.

The Fire TV Stick 4K Select, introduced in October 2025, was the first to feature Vega OS. The new Fire TV Stick HD, announced this week, also runs on Vega OS and includes a notice stating, "For enhanced security, this device prevents sideloading or installing apps from unknown sources. Only apps from the Amazon Appstore are available for download."

This move aligns with Amazon's ongoing efforts to combat piracy. In November 2025, the company began blocking apps identified as providing access to unlicensed content, even if sideloaded. Amazon stated, "Piracy is illegal and we've always worked to block it from our app store. We'll now block apps identified as providing access to pirated content, including those downloaded from outside our app store."

While these changes may not affect all users, those who rely on sideloading to access apps outside the Amazon Appstore may need to consider alternative streaming devices or explore potential workarounds.
