Allbirds, the San Francisco-based company renowned for its sustainable footwear, has announced a strategic shift from shoe manufacturing to artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. The company plans to rebrand as "NewBird AI" and focus on providing GPU-as-a-Service (GPUaaS) and AI-native cloud solutions.
To facilitate this transition, Allbirds has secured a $50 million convertible financing agreement with an unnamed institutional investor. The funds will be used to acquire high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs) essential for AI processing.
In conjunction with this pivot, Allbirds has agreed to sell its brand and footwear assets to American Exchange Group for approximately $39 million. This sale marks a significant departure from its original mission of creating sustainable footwear.
Following the announcement, Allbirds' stock experienced a substantial surge, increasing by over 400% in a single day. This dramatic rise reflects investor enthusiasm for AI-related ventures, despite the company's lack of prior experience in the tech industry.
Industry experts have expressed skepticism regarding the feasibility of this transition. Mark Malek, Chief Investment Officer at Siebert Financial, noted, "The market is not pricing risk; it is pricing narrative. It is pricing the word 'AI' the same way it once priced the word 'blockchain' and before that the suffix '.com.'"
The shift also raises questions about the company's commitment to its original sustainability mission, as AI infrastructure is known to be energy-intensive. Observers are closely watching to see if Allbirds can successfully navigate this significant transformation.
