U.S. and Iran Engage in Indirect Talks to Extend Ceasefire

The United States and Iran are conducting indirect negotiations to prolong the current two-week ceasefire, with Pakistan mediating efforts to facilitate a second round of peace talks.

The United States and Iran are engaged in indirect negotiations aimed at extending the current two-week ceasefire beyond its scheduled expiration on April 22. Pakistan's Foreign Ministry announced that both nations anticipate a second round of peace talks to seek a permanent resolution to the nearly seven-week conflict in the Middle East.

Pakistan's army chief, Asim Munir, visited Tehran to advance these discussions. Pakistan, maintaining strong diplomatic ties with both the U.S. and Iran, has emerged as a key mediator in the negotiations. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized Pakistan's central role, stating, "The Pakistanis are the only mediator in this negotiation."

Despite these diplomatic efforts, challenges persist. U.S. Vice President JD Vance highlighted a significant obstacle: Iran's reluctance to commit to abandoning its nuclear ambitions. Vance stated, "The simple fact is that we need to see an affirmative commitment that they will not seek a nuclear weapon."

In parallel, tensions between Israel and Lebanon continue. An Israeli official indicated that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to speak with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, though Lebanon's presidency reported having no information about such talks. This development follows a trilateral meeting between the United States, Israel, and Lebanon, aiming to de-escalate the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

The situation remains fluid, with ongoing diplomatic efforts seeking to extend the ceasefire and address underlying issues contributing to regional instability.
