Brian Cole Jr., accused of planting pipe bombs near political party headquarters in Washington, D.C., on January 5, 2021, now faces two additional felony charges.

Brian Cole Jr., 30, of Woodbridge, Virginia, has been indicted on two additional felony charges related to the placement of pipe bombs near the Republican and Democratic National Committee headquarters on January 5, 2021. The new charges include attempting to use weapons of mass destruction and committing an act of terrorism while armed.

Cole was initially arrested in December 2025 and charged with transporting and planting two improvised explosive devices outside the DNC and RNC buildings. Although the devices did not detonate, the FBI confirmed they were viable.

In January 2026, a federal judge ordered Cole to remain in custody pending trial, citing an "intolerable risk of danger to the community." The judge stated that no conditions of release could reasonably assure public safety.

Court documents reveal that Cole told investigators he believed the 2020 election had been tampered with and felt compelled to act. He detailed the construction, transportation, and placement of the pipe bombs during a 90-minute interview. Cole expressed dissatisfaction with both political parties, stating he did not like either at that point.

Cole pleaded not guilty to the initial charges and has yet to be arraigned on the new counts. A status hearing is scheduled for April 21, 2026.
