Bank of America Reports Strong Q1 2026 Earnings, Surpassing Expectations

Summary

Bank of America announced a 17% increase in net income for Q1 2026, driven by higher net interest income and robust trading revenue.

Bank of America reported a 17% increase in net income for the first quarter of 2026, reaching $8.6 billion, or $1.11 per share, surpassing analysts' expectations of $1.01 per share. Revenue rose 7.2% to $30.43 billion, driven by higher net interest income, increased trading revenue, and fees from investment banking and asset management.

Equities trading revenue surged 30% to $2.83 billion, contributing to the bank's strongest trading quarter in 15 years. Investment banking revenue increased by 21% to $1.8 billion. Net interest income grew 9% to $15.9 billion, attributed to higher loan and deposit balances, fixed-rate asset repricing, and market activity.

The bank set aside $1.3 billion for credit losses, down from $1.5 billion in the same period last year. CEO Brian Moynihan stated, "We remain watchful of evolving risks. However, we saw healthy client activity, including solid consumer spending and stable asset quality, indicating a resilient American economy."

Despite these gains, fixed income revenue fell short of expectations, generating approximately $3.5 billion, missing estimates by about $330 million. The net-charge-off ratio improved by 6 basis points to 0.48%. Consumer banking and global wealth divisions each saw revenue increases of over 20%. Return on tangible common equity, a measure of profitability, was 16%, marking an improvement of more than 200 basis points.
