Teen Indicted for Murder of Stepsister Aboard Carnival Cruise
A 16-year-old has been indicted as an adult for the murder and sexual assault of his 18-year-old stepsister during a family cruise.
A 16-year-old boy has been indicted as an adult on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse in connection with the death of his 18-year-old stepsister, Anna Kepner, during a family vacation aboard the Carnival Horizon cruise ship in November.
The U.S. Department of Justice alleges that the teenager sexually assaulted and intentionally killed Kepner while the ship was in international waters. Initially charged as a juvenile, the stepbrother's case was moved to adult court following a grand jury indictment.
Kepner, a high school senior from Titusville, Florida, was found deceased under a bed in her cabin, wrapped in a blanket and covered by life vests. The cause of death was determined to be mechanical asphyxia.
The family, including Kepner's father, stepmother, and grandparents, was on the cruise together. Her grandparents described the family dynamic as close-knit, emphasizing that there was "no such thing as steps" in their family.
The accused stepbrother has pleaded not guilty. Initially released to family under electronic monitoring, prosecutors are now challenging his release status, citing public safety concerns.
The case is being prosecuted federally due to the incident occurring in international waters, a rare circumstance for a defendant of this age.
