American Man Arrested in Bahamas After Wife's Disappearance at Sea
Brian Hooker, a Michigan resident, has been arrested in the Bahamas following the disappearance of his wife, Lynette Hooker, who reportedly fell overboard during a boat trip near Elbow Cay.
Brian Hooker, a 59-year-old man from Michigan, has been arrested in the Bahamas following the disappearance of his wife, Lynette Hooker, 55, during a boating trip near Elbow Cay. According to Bahamian authorities, Brian reported that Lynette fell overboard from their 8-foot motorboat on Saturday night while they were traveling from Hope Town to Elbow Cay. He stated that she had the boat's keys, causing the engine to shut off, and that strong currents carried her away before he could reach her. Brian then paddled to shore and alerted authorities early Sunday.
On Wednesday, Bahamian police arrested Brian Hooker in Abaco for questioning regarding his wife's disappearance. His attorney, Terrel Butler, stated that Brian "categorically and unequivocally denies any wrongdoing" and is cooperating with the investigation. The U.S. Coast Guard has also initiated a separate criminal investigation into the case.
Family members have expressed skepticism about Brian's account. Lynette's daughter, Karli Aylesworth, noted that her mother was an experienced sailor and found it unlikely that she would "just fall" off the boat. She also mentioned a history of volatility in her mother's relationship with Brian, particularly when alcohol was involved.
The couple, married for over two decades, had been documenting their sailing adventures in the Caribbean on social media under the moniker "The Sailing Hookers." Despite their online portrayal, reports indicate a history of domestic disputes, including a 2015 incident where both accused each other of assault.
As of now, no formal charges have been filed against Brian Hooker. The search for Lynette continues, with both Bahamian authorities and the U.S. Coast Guard actively investigating the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.
