Rory McIlroy Sets Masters Record with Six-Shot Lead After Second Round
Defending champion Rory McIlroy leads the 2026 Masters by six strokes after a remarkable second-round 65, positioning himself for a potential back-to-back victory.
Defending Masters champion Rory McIlroy has established a commanding six-shot lead at the halfway point of the 2026 tournament, following a stellar second-round performance at Augusta National. McIlroy's 7-under-par 65 on Friday, highlighted by six birdies over the final seven holes, brought his total to 12-under 132, setting a new Masters record for the largest 36-hole lead.
McIlroy's surge began on the back nine, where he birdied the 12th, 13th, 15th, and 16th holes. A notable highlight was his chip-in from 30 yards on the 17th, followed by another birdie on the 18th, capping off a remarkable round.
Trailing McIlroy are Sam Burns and Patrick Reed, both tied for second at 6-under. Justin Rose, Shane Lowry, and Tommy Fleetwood are one stroke further back at 5-under.
Reflecting on his performance, McIlroy stated, "I knew I had some chances coming in when I was standing on the 12th tee, but I didn’t think I’d birdie six of the last seven."
As the tournament progresses into the weekend, McIlroy aims to maintain his momentum and secure consecutive Masters titles, a feat previously achieved by only three players: Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods.
