Rory McIlroy Sets Masters Record with Six-Shot Lead After 36 Holes
Rory McIlroy leads the Masters by six strokes after a second-round 65, marking the largest 36-hole lead in tournament history.
Rory McIlroy delivered a remarkable performance in the second round of the 2026 Masters Tournament, carding a seven-under-par 65 to establish a six-stroke lead at the halfway mark. This margin sets a new Masters record for the largest lead after 36 holes.
McIlroy's round was highlighted by six birdies over the final seven holes, including a chip-in from 29 yards on the 17th and a six-foot birdie putt on the 18th.
Reflecting on his performance, McIlroy stated, "I knew I had some chances coming in when I was standing on the 12th tee, but I didn’t think I’d birdie six of the last seven."
Trailing McIlroy are Sam Burns and Patrick Reed, both tied for second at six-under-par. Justin Rose, Shane Lowry, and Tommy Fleetwood are one stroke further back at five-under.
McIlroy aims to become the fourth player to win consecutive Masters titles, a feat previously achieved by Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods.
The tournament continues with the third round on Saturday, where McIlroy will seek to maintain his commanding lead.
