The Trump administration has unveiled plans for a 250-foot triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery, intended to commemorate the United States' 250th anniversary. The proposed structure, designed by Harrison Design, would be more than twice the height of the 99-foot Lincoln Memorial and would become the tallest triumphal arch in the world, surpassing Mexico City's Plaza de la República by approximately 30 feet.

The arch is planned for Memorial Circle, a traffic roundabout near the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery, situated between the Lincoln Memorial and the cemetery. The design features inscriptions reading "One Nation Under God" and "Liberty and Justice For All" on either side. Atop the arch, a gold-colored statue of Lady Liberty, flanked by two eagles, is proposed, with four lion statues at the base.

President Trump has championed the project, sharing design concepts over the past several months and stating that the arch is intended "for me." He has indicated that the structure, resembling Paris' Arc de Triomphe, will commemorate the country's 250th anniversary. In a post to Truth Social, Mr. Trump announced that his administration had "officially filed the presentation and plans to the highly respected Commission of Fine Arts for what will be the GREATEST and MOST BEAUTIFUL Triumphal Arch, anywhere in the World."

The project has sparked controversy, with military veterans and historic preservationists filing a lawsuit to halt construction, arguing that it would obstruct key views when visiting Arlington National Cemetery and had not received proper approval from Congress or federal review panels. The proposed site is along a flight path for nearby Reagan National Airport, raising questions about potential impacts on air traffic.

The Commission of Fine Arts, a panel composed entirely of Trump appointees, is scheduled to review the proposal on April 16. The administration's spending plan for the National Endowment for the Humanities includes $2 million in special initiative funds and $13 million in matching funds reserved for the arch.
