Rep. Eric Swalwell Faces Sexual Assault Allegations Amid Calls to End Gubernatorial Campaign

Resumen

California gubernatorial candidate Rep. Eric Swalwell denies sexual assault allegations from a former staffer, as prominent supporters withdraw endorsements and urge him to exit the race.

California Representative Eric Swalwell, a leading Democratic candidate for governor, is confronting allegations of sexual assault from a former staffer, leading to widespread calls for him to withdraw from the race. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the woman accused Swalwell of assaulting her in 2019 and 2024, including during her tenure in his congressional office.

Swalwell has categorically denied the allegations, stating, "These allegations of sexual assault are flat false. They're absolutely false. They did not happen, they have never happened, and I will fight them with everything that I have."

In response to the accusations, several prominent supporters have rescinded their endorsements. Senator Adam Schiff withdrew his support and called for Swalwell to exit the gubernatorial race. Similarly, Representative Jimmy Gomez stepped away from his role as co-chair of Swalwell's campaign, urging him to "leave the race now so there can be full accountability without doubt, distraction, or delay."

House Democratic leadership, including Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Whip Katherine Clark, and Representative Pete Aguilar, issued a joint statement calling for a "swift investigation" and for Swalwell to "immediately end his campaign."

The California Teachers Association and SEIU California have suspended their support for Swalwell's campaign pending further developments.

Swalwell has indicated he will spend time with his family and provide an update on his campaign soon.
