Apple to Close Three U.S. Retail Stores Amid Declining Mall Conditions

Summary

Apple announces the closure of three U.S. retail stores, including its first unionized location, citing deteriorating mall environments.

Apple has announced plans to permanently close three of its U.S. retail stores in June, including locations in Trumbull, Connecticut; Escondido, California; and Towson, Maryland. The Towson store notably became the company's first unionized retail location in 2022.

In a statement, Apple attributed the closures to "the departure of several retailers and declining conditions" at the respective shopping centers. Employees at the Trumbull and Escondido stores will have opportunities to transfer to nearby Apple Retail locations. Towson employees are eligible to apply for open roles within the company, in accordance with their collective bargaining agreement.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, representing the Towson employees, expressed concern over the closure, suggesting it may be an attempt to undermine the union. The organization stated it is exploring all legal options and plans to collaborate with elected officials to address the situation.

These closures are part of Apple's ongoing evaluation of its retail operations, aiming to adapt to changing market conditions and customer needs.
