Apple to Close First Unionized Retail Store in Maryland
Apple announced the upcoming closure of its Towson, Maryland store, the company's first unionized retail location, citing declining mall conditions.
Apple has announced plans to permanently close its retail store at Towson Town Center in Maryland this June. This location gained national attention in 2022 when it became the company's first U.S. store to unionize, with employees joining the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM).
The company attributed the closure to "the departure of several retailers and declining conditions" at the mall. Apple stated that employees at the Towson store will be eligible to apply for open roles within the company, in accordance with their collective bargaining agreement.
The IAM union expressed strong opposition to the decision, stating: "The IAM Union is outraged by Apple's decision to close its Towson, Md., store—the first unionized Apple retail location in the United States—and abandon both its workers and a community that relies on it for critical services and its unique access to public transit."
In addition to the Towson location, Apple will also close stores in Trumbull, Connecticut, and Escondido, California, citing similar reasons related to mall conditions. Employees at these locations are expected to continue their roles at nearby Apple stores.
The Towson store's unionization in 2022 marked a significant milestone for labor movements within the tech industry, as it was the first Apple retail location in the U.S. to unionize.
