Polymarket Traders' Timely Bets on US-Iran Ceasefire Raise Insider Trading Concerns

Résumé

Newly created accounts on Polymarket placed significant bets on a US-Iran ceasefire shortly before its announcement, leading to substantial profits and prompting questions about potential insider trading.

In the hours leading up to President Donald Trump's announcement of a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran on April 7, several newly created accounts on the prediction market platform Polymarket placed substantial "Yes" bets on the ceasefire occurring. These well-timed wagers resulted in profits totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars for the account holders.

One account, established on the day of the announcement, invested approximately $72,000 and secured a profit of $200,000. Another account, created on April 6, earned $125,500 from similar bets. These transactions occurred despite escalating rhetoric from President Trump earlier that day, including a social media warning that "a whole civilization will die tonight" if Iran did not comply with his demand to reopen the Strait of Hormuz by 8 p.m. Eastern Time.

The pattern of newly created accounts making strategic, well-timed bets on geopolitical events has been observed previously on Polymarket. In January, similar accounts placed large wagers hours before the reported capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, resulting in significant profits. These instances have raised concerns about potential insider trading within prediction markets.

Todd Philips, a professor at Georgia State University who has written on prediction markets and the industry's regulations, commented on the situation:

"This is why these markets need regulation. We can't have people trading with inside information and expect other traders are going to be OK being in these markets."

In response to the controversy, Polymarket has labeled the U.S.-Iran ceasefire bet as "disputed," citing ongoing regional tensions and restrictions. The resolution of this dispute could take up to 48 hours. The platform has not provided further comments on the matter.

The recurrence of such trading patterns has prompted bipartisan groups of lawmakers to introduce legislation aimed at broadening the definition of insider trading to encompass prediction markets. The goal is to enhance regulation and prevent the exploitation of non-public information for financial gain in these platforms.
