A Hawaii anesthesiologist has been convicted of attempted manslaughter for assaulting his wife during a cliffside hike, facing up to 20 years in prison.

A Honolulu jury found Dr. Gerhardt Konig guilty of attempted manslaughter, determining he acted under extreme mental or emotional disturbance during the March 2025 incident on the Pali Puka Trail. The verdict, reached after over eight hours of deliberation, acquitted him of the more severe charge of second-degree attempted murder.

Konig, 47, was accused of attempting to push his wife, Arielle Konig, off a cliff, trying to inject her with a syringe, and striking her with a rock. The assault was interrupted by two hikers who heard her cries for help. Konig claimed self-defense, alleging his wife initiated the physical altercation.

Following the verdict, defense attorney Thomas Otake expressed gratitude that Konig was not convicted of attempted murder, which carries a life sentence, and indicated plans to appeal. Sentencing is scheduled for August 13, 2026.

The trial, which lasted approximately three weeks, featured conflicting testimonies from both parties regarding the events of March 24, 2025. The couple's marital issues, including Arielle Konig's emotional affair with a coworker, were central to the case. She testified that her husband became obsessed with the affair, leading to the violent confrontation during the hike.

Konig's defense argued that the allegations were unsubstantiated and that he acted in self-defense after his wife attacked him. The jury's decision reflects their assessment of the evidence presented during the trial.

The case has drawn significant public attention, highlighting issues of domestic violence and the complexities of marital relationships. The upcoming sentencing will determine the extent of Konig's punishment for his actions during the incident.
